Social Use of Language Programme
for
Secondary School + College Students

Dealing with issues relevant to teenagers and young adults, SULP-SC incorporates the SULP principles that have proven to be effective in a number of independent research studies with young people who have special needs including Autism Spectrum Disorders, Specific Language Disorder, Learning Difficulties, Sensory Impairment and Emotional – Behavioural Difficulties. Additionally SULP is being used effectively with mainstream class groups as part
of PSE and is being used to promote social inclusion in some schools.

Using a metacognitive approach, SULP-SC enables students to understand how they can effectively use a range of social communication and behavioural skills to manage a variety of situations where they may have had difficulties before. Through a number of graded activities they then practice and apply the skills.
It is the focus on comprehension before use that makes SULP particularly effective.

SULP is recommended by the DfE and has been commented upon favourably in many Ofsted inspection reports.

I have given this my all to make it the best (and possibly the last) edition!

The latest edition returns to the framework of the original programme but with added flexibility!. The manual contains more guidance than in previous editions with session plan frameworks and lesson planner pack. All the pictures are now coloured using techniques to enhance key information. There are many new activities added to those included in the 2012 edition and two ‘fantasy’ stories (one in each set), The Communicators and The Friendship
Guru, written and illustrated to appeal to teenagers, that assist students’ understanding and add to the fun.

SULP-SC comprises two sets. Set 1 is about social communication and self-other awareness including friendship and self-esteem. Set 2 is about social behavior, emotional well-being and further aspects of self-other awareness not covered in set 1, including opinion, decision making
and other people’s perspectives.

How Are You Doing? is the SULP-SC assessment and evaluation guide.
It has been developed to give you a clearer idea of students’ skills in the areas covered by the SULP teaching programme so that you can see where their strengths and difficulties lie. It will also help you to evaluate the effectiveness
of your teaching.

Part 1: Before and After includes a range of ways for you to obtain a baseline measurement before you start teaching. You can then measure the students’ progress, in line with your teaching targets, when you have completed a
number of the skills/themes included in the teaching programme.

Part 2: As you Go gives ideas for how you can use some of the SULP
teaching activities to monitor progress as you go through the programme.
The As you Go assessment activities will be particularly useful for teachers
and therapists who do not have time to complete a base line measure before they start teaching but it also gives another method for evaluation that can be used in addition to the baseline measurements.

Ideas for student and parent evaluation are also included.

How Are You Doing? includes a pack of 20 assessment record booklets.
Further packs can be purchased separately as needed.
