The SULP-SLD includes the following sections:
• Getting your Attention/Getting ready for Social Communication
• Communication Basics
• Happy Friends
• Happy or Not Happy?
• Day to Day (sleeping easy, eating well)
• A Teacher/Therapist Manual with guidelines for use, developmental
information and activities.
• Four Picture Books in colour
• Talking Picture ebook in colour with voice- overs for the characters.
SULP-SLD covers a developmental range
of approximately 12 months to 4 years but with material and
activities to appeal to students into their teenage years including
those who are at the earliest stages of language development. The
popular friendly monster characters are included to engage pupils’
interest and make learning fun but they have been redesigned for
this version to appeal to all age groups. Human characters are
additionally included (each monster has two human friends - one aged
about 8 or 9; the other a teenager) to increase the functionality -
albeit the monster characters are actually very human! For example,
they go to school, sleep in beds, have emotions/facial expressions;
so the pupils should be able to relate to them as they do to the
human characters whilst at the same time enjoying the
On the talking pictures, the characters talk directly to the pupils in their own distinctive voices. These pictures are interactive in that the pupil can make the characters repeat their words by clicking on the screen…plus they can talk back if they want to! You will also be able to show the talking pictures on a large screen to achieve bigger images where necessary to get the pupils’ attention in the early stages of teaching/therapy.
The principles underpinning SULP-SLD are the same as the other versions of SULP – the activities are ordered so that pupils can first understand how the skills or ideas being introduced can help them socially – even at this very basic level. This enables the pupils to get the most out of the practice games that follow and to use the skills in their everyday experiences.
